When choosing stage lights of appropriate power based on the size of the stage, you can start from two aspects: the applicable scenarios of different types of stage lights and the lighting needs of different areas on the stage.
Different types of stage lights are suitable for various scenarios and power selection
Beam lights: The power selection of beam lights is closely related to the size of the stage and the budget. For small venues, such as small meeting room stages and small performance bar stages, low-power lamps, like 230W, can be chosen. Such power can meet the lighting needs of smaller Spaces, and the cost is relatively low. For large stages, such as large concert stages and large theater stages, higher-power lighting fixtures, like 350W or 380W, may be required to ensure sufficient brightness and projection distance, so that every corner of the stage can be illuminated.
Spotlight: Spotlights offer concentrated light with clear spots, making them suitable for highlighting specific areas or serving as the main light source. If the stage is small and used for local lighting, such as highlighting a certain actor or prop, a power of less than 2kW can meet the requirements. If the stage is large and serves as the main light source to illuminate a larger area, the power should be above 2kW to ensure sufficient brightness and illumination range.
Diffused light: Diffused light has a soft light line and a large coverage area, and is often used for ceiling lighting or general lighting. For small stages, such as those in small indoor theaters, the power can be selected to be relatively small based on the size of the stage, as long as it can meet the basic requirements of a canopy or general lighting. For large stages, such as large outdoor performance stages, more powerful diffused lights are needed, such as high-power diffused lights like the top and bottom double-row lights. The top row lights are used to illuminate the sky from top to bottom, requiring a bright and balanced light with a large illuminated area. The floor lights are placed at the lower part of the canopy and shine upwards, connecting with the light from the ceiling lights, ensuring even illumination from top to bottom. They can also be installed on the stage surface as needed to guarantee uniform lighting throughout the stage.
Follow-up lights: Follow-up lights have high brightness and can adjust the brightness of the light spot, making them suitable for following actors or highlighting key points. On small stages, such as small drama stages, low-power follow-up lights can meet the needs of tracking actors and highlighting key points. On large stages, such as large-scale song and dance performance stages, in order to clearly illuminate the actors from a relatively long distance, higher-power follow-up lights are needed.
Lighting requirements and power selection for different areas of the stage
Facing light area: Depending on the scale of the theater stage, there may be one, two, or even three facing lights. The configuration of the surface light should be based on the different distances, with spotlights and imaging lights of different gathering distances, and their power should be above 2kW. The first beam of light is relatively close to the stage opening. Some 2kW ribbed lamps and reflector lamps can be added.
Slap area: The slaps are symmetrically set on both sides of the stage opening. Depending on the scale of the theater stage, one or two ear lights can be set on each side. The configured lighting fixtures are mainly spotlights, and a small number of imaging lights and ribbed lights can be configured. Each side of the face should be equipped with a set of spotlight lights for the spotlight personnel to adjust. The power selection should be determined based on the type of spotlight lights and the scale of the stage. Generally speaking, for spotlight lights, the power should be able to meet the demand of illuminating the side area of the stage.
The footlight area: The footlight is usually located beside the orchestra pit outside the stage opening. A footlight slot is set up with a four-color diffused light strip lamp inside, which is controlled by color separation. Its length is slightly shorter than the width of the stage opening. The power selection should ensure that the footlight evenly illuminates the front area of the stage, providing basic lighting for the actors.
